This experience takes us into the Khan Khentii. A Strictly Protected Area of Taiga forest and mountains, that extends up to the Russian border – Siberia. The southern edge of the Khentii is the transition from steppe to forest, creating a beautiful landscape of wildflower meadows, larch and birch woodlands.
The Khentii is habitat for wolves, lynx, brown bear, red deer, moose and wild boar, although admittedly these are hard to see during the summer, but there will be tracks and sign. Birdlife is plentiful, from Azure Tits to Steppe Eagles and Ural Owls.
We would love to tailor a custom trip to the Khentii for you
To Jalman Meadows
Its just a 3 hour drive out of Ulaanbaatar to Jalman Meadows on the edge of the Khan Khentii Wilderness. Jalman Meadows is the location of Nomadic Journeys’ original low impact ger camp, which we use as the starting point for this 360° experience. It is located on wildflower meadows along side the Upper Tuul River. North from the meadows is complete wilderness.
Private 360° camp in the Khentii Wilderness
Into the wild. Set out with yak-carts to our private camp in the wilderness. Its about an 8 km or 2 hour walk, you can sit on the cart, walk, or horse ride. We spend the days hiking, horse riding, bird watching, or simply enjoying the wild landscapes and wildflowers. We will even set up a sauna in a ger by the river side: you can help out and learn how to build the ger.
Return from the Wilds
We’ll return with the yak carts to Jalman Meadows. There is an option to raft back downstream on the Tuul River. From Jalman you have the choice of traveling directly back, spending another night at Jalman Meadows Ger Camp, transferring to the luxury Terelj Hotel in the nearly Gorkhii-Terelj National Park, or arranging a private Cessna flight directly to the East Gobi or one of our other destinations.
This is a relatively accessible location my Mongolian standards, only a 3hr drive from Ulaanbaatar, yet feeling surprisingly wild and remote. The trip can suit varying levels of fitness as there are options to hike, ride, or travel by yak cart.
It’s an outdoors experience with camping in comfort and a unique style.

The trip is easily extended with additional nights at the private 360° camp, or at Jalman Meadows. For a longer wilderness experience you might like to consider our Khentii Wilderness Ride.

Jalman Meadows Ger Camp
On this trip we spend one or two nights at Nomadic Journeys’ Jalman Meadows Ger Camp, on the way to, or returning from your private 360° camp. This is a well-appointed low impact ger camp with no permanent structures.
Bedrooms, dining room, and even hot shower are all housed in traditional Mongolian gers. At the end of the season the camp is fully dismantled for the winter, and re-erected the following spring.
